Olveras Street’s Dia De Los Muertos celebration was in full swing this weekend.
Skellies came and danced in the crowd to spoken word and instrumental music. Ofrendas were set up around the square. It was a jolly day and you could really sense the connection between the living and their beloved dead as you walked about the perimeter of the square.
The only downside for me was, there were a bunch of people wearing Yes on 8 shirts and carrying signs at the square during part of the celebration, and I got so angry I was kind of paralyzed by tears and incoherent rage. I wanted to scream. I can’t even be rational about this one anymore. I’m out of reasoned debate.
I entreat people to vote NO on Prop 8. Do not amend the Constitution of this state to include discrimination and hatred.
Please.

For the record, if I lived in CA I would vote no on prop 8, but I don’t agree with you that is amending the constitution to include hatred. I do not believe that the supporters of this (ridiculous) proposition are hateful, but I think that they believe something that I do not. That does not mean they ALL hate those who disagree.
Thanks, Britt. For the record, I don’t think every single person voting “Yes” on 8 is slavering at the mouth with hatred for Teh Gay, but I do think that this amendment is rooted in fear and hatred, and anyone voting for it is tacitly supporting that. Even if they themselves do not hate.
The biggest contributors to this campaign for Yes on 8 have been out of state churches, such as the Mormon church in Utah. Why? Well… I think hate has something to do with that. The tactics the Yes on 8 campaign has used have been at times abusive and wrong. I think hate has something to do with that.
In my belief system, discrimination is rooted in hatred and also in fear. Writing discriminatory language into the state constitution is, imo, writing the language of hatred and fear into the state constitution. It does not belong there, no matter what you call it.
My sister in law and parents in law are probably voting YES on this measure today. Do I think they hate? Not really. I don’t think they are capable of full out hate. But I think they are afraid and ignorant, and that makes them vulnerable to supporting a law that is rooted in, imo, hatred.
Mileage totally varies on this one.
